Ask
How many eggs in the full box? So how many altogether?
Play
Put 10 pasta pieces in a cup and a few more beside it. Say "10 and 3 is 13", then change the few.

Common mistakes and how to help

  • Wrote only the eggs in the second box, as in 4 for 14: the full box of ten got left out.

Try this: Point to the full box and say "10", then count on along the second box: "11, 12, 13, 14".

  • Wrote the whole number where the eggs in the second box go, as in "10 and 14": which part is which may not be clear yet.

Try this: Cover the full box with a hand and ask "how many can you see now?", then uncover it: "and altogether?"

  • The digits are the wrong way round, as in 41 for 14. "Fourteen" says the 4 first, but we write the 1 first.

Try this: Say "fourteen is ten and four" and write the 1 for the ten first, then the 4.

  • One more or one less: an egg was counted twice or skipped.

Try this: Touch each egg in the second box as you count it. The rows go in fives.

  • The answer is a long way off: a teen as 10 and some more may not make sense yet.

Try this: Make teens with 10 pasta pieces in a cup and a few more beside it. Say "10 and 3 is 13" together.
