Read number words to 20
Reading number words as numbers. Fourteen says the 4 first, but we write the 1 first.
New sheets start on target. You can also print an easier one or a harder one.
What your child will see
The whole sheet as it prints. Every new sheet has different numbers.
Read the word on each tag. Write the number in the box.
Two minutes at home
- Ask
- Read the word slowly. Which part tells you it is a teen?
- Play
- Hide number-word cards around a room. For each one they find, they read it and fetch that many spoons.
Common mistakes and how to help
The digits are the wrong way round, as in 41 for fourteen. The word says the 4 first, but we write the 1 first.
Try this: Say "fourteen is ten and four" and write it as you say it: the 1 for the ten first, then the 4.
Read the start of the word and stopped, as in 7 for seventeen: the "-teen" at the end got missed.
Try this: Cover the end of the word with a finger, read "seven", then uncover "-teen" and read the whole word together.
Wrote a different number: they may be guessing from the first letter, as with six, seven, sixteen and seventeen.
Try this: Make pairs of cards, one with the word and one with the number, and play pairs together.
