Chalk a number line from 0 to 20 outside. Call a number and they hop to it; then swap.

Common mistakes and how to help

  • The answer is one out: they may have counted the printed number as "1" when hopping along, instead of counting the hops.

Try this: Put a finger on the printed number, then hop to each mark saying the next number: "5, hop, 6, hop, 7".

  • Counted the right number of hops, but the wrong way from the printed number: back instead of on, or on instead of back.

Try this: Talk about which way the numbers get bigger before hopping, and point that way.

  • The answer is a long way off: they may not be using the printed numbers to work out the others yet.

Try this: Draw a number line on a long strip of paper together and write in every number, then cover some up.

Curriculum links
