- Ask
- How did you know when to stop colouring?
- Play
- Ask for a number of things: "Can you give me 13 pieces of pasta?" Count them out together and stop at 13.
Common mistakes and how to help
Coloured every balloon: they may count the whole group instead of stopping at the number asked for.
Try this: Ask for a number of spoons from the drawer and count them out together. Say "stop!" when you reach the number.
One more or one fewer than the number: a balloon was counted twice or skipped.
Try this: Say each number as you colour that balloon, and stop as soon as you say the number asked for.
Coloured 10 when the number was a teen: counting on past 10 may not feel sure yet.
Try this: Count past ten together on the stairs or with pasta: "…9, 10, 11, 12, 13".
Coloured only the ones, as in 4 for 14: they may have read the 4 and not the 1, which stands for ten.
Try this: Say "fourteen is ten and four". Count out ten, then four more, and put them together.
The answer is a long way off: they may have lost track of how many they had coloured.
Try this: Say the number out loud before starting, then count out loud as each balloon is coloured.
