Ask
Start at 13 and count on. Which number comes next? And next?
Play
Take turns saying the next number, starting anywhere: you say 8, they say 9, you say 10…

Common mistakes and how to help

  • The digits are the wrong way round, as in 41 for 14. "Fourteen" says the 4 first, but we write the 1 first.

Try this: Say "fourteen is ten and four" and write the 1 for the ten first, then the 4.

  • Stuck at a new ten, as in 110 or 2 for twenty after 19: the next ten may not be secure yet.

Try this: Count up the stairs past 9 and past 19 together, slowly: "…18, 19, 20!"

  • Two out: they may have counted backwards instead of forwards.

Try this: Before starting, point along the train and ask "do the numbers get bigger or smaller?"

  • One out: a number was skipped or said twice.

Try this: Count along the train together, pointing at each carriage as you say its number.

  • The answer is a long way off: the order of the numbers to 20 may not be secure yet.

Try this: Say the numbers together while pointing along a number track, then cover one and ask which is hiding.
