Common mistakes and how to help
Answer is one more or one less than the right amount: an object was counted twice or skipped.
Try this: Ask them to touch each object as they say its number, or move objects into a line as they count them.
Answer is far from the right amount: they may be guessing, or not yet linking the written number to how many there are.
Try this: Count real objects together, then point to the matching number on a number track and say "so there are 4".
